WeChat’s native AI assistant generates mini-programs from a single sentence

WeChat is quietly rolling out a limited test of a native AI assistant called Xiao Wei, tucked into the upper-left corner of the app's main interface. The assistant lets users control WeChat’s built-in features — and even generate mini-programs — using text or voice commands.
According to early testers, Xiao Wei can create playable music playlists from a conversation, generate custom widgets complete with charts and buttons on the fly, and produce summaries of group chats with a single prompt.
Tencent customer service confirmed the test, saying Xiao Wei is a native assistant developed by the WeChat team. The underlying main model is Tencent's own WeLM large language model, with responses from DeepSeek serving as a fallback.
Xiao Wei is deeply integrated into WeChat’s ecosystem. Users can send a PDF and get a structured summary along with the assistant's reasoning process. Setting a five-minute reminder creates a to-do directly in the chat. And typing a request can build a mini-tool with pages, buttons, and statistical charts in seconds — though generated tools are for personal use only and cannot be shared.
Unlike standalone third-party model assistants, Xiao Wei lives inside WeChat’s own interface, directly connected to the user’s contacts, official accounts, video accounts, files, and WeChat Pay.
The assistant is still in gray-scale testing, with some rough edges. Tencent hasn’t announced a wider rollout plan yet.
