The personal AI agent project OpenClaw just got a whole lot more official. Its nonprofit foundation, the OpenClaw Foundation, is now up and running.
OpenClaw is an open-source AI assistant that lives on your own device. It plugs into email, calendars, chat apps, and local tools, letting AI actually do things for you instead of just chatting.
The foundation will handle governance, funding, community, and long-term maintenance, keeping the project open-source and independent.
OpenClaw remains under the MIT license. Peter Steinberger will continue to steer the project's direction, especially on technical decisions. OpenAI has also committed to supporting OpenClaw as an open, independent project.
Initial partners include OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, the University of Michigan, GitHub, Cloudflare, Vercel, and others. Chinese tech giant Tencent is on the list too, focusing on security, deployment, and infrastructure support.
