Berkeley SkyDeck Fund founding partner Chon Tang is publicly bullish on Chinese AI. He claims that Chinese models are just getting started, while OpenAI and Anthropic are already facing serious trouble.
His logic is simple. Chinese AI used to lack compute, funding, and customers. Now overseas users are applying for API access, Huawei and other vendors are filling the compute gap, and top teams have secured more funding. Tang expects that over the next 12 months, Zhipu, DeepSeek, and Kimi will all get significantly stronger. The recent wave of Chinese model breakthroughs, he says, is only the beginning.
