Nvidia is pouring more money into Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the secretive startup founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. The chipmaker has struck a long-term deal with SSI that will give the lab access to its next-generation Vera Rubin GPUs, with plans to expand its computing resources by roughly 10 times.
SSI had been primarily using Google's TPUs for its work. Both Nvidia and Google were already investors, but now Nvidia is upping its bet with fresh funding and hardware, signaling a tug-of-war for the startup's compute business.
The two companies will also collaborate on improving Nvidia's current and future computing platforms. Nvidia called the investment "substantial" but declined to disclose the exact amount.
Founded in 2024, SSI has yet to release any model or product. Its sole mission: develop safe superintelligence. Nvidia decided to double down after reviewing SSI's research progress, though neither side is saying what SSI has actually achieved.
